Skills & Raids Launch-Week Beginner Tips

Consolidated advice for your first extractions after the July 27, 2026 Steam release.

Beginner Tips

Skills & Raids went live on Steam on July 27, 2026, and the first week rewards players who learn a handful of systems early—before bad habits cost you hours of lost loot. This page collects launch-week tips that repeat across successful extractions: pause combat, safe pocket discipline, Crowy sendbacks, Focus Points, healing nodes, extraction timing, first crafts, Free Skills clarity, demo versus full differences, and the introductory sale window.

If you have not finished the tutorial yet, start with the Getting Started guide and the Controls guide so movement, pause, and party switching feel natural before you apply the advice below.

Treat Pause as Your Primary Combat Tool

Real-time combat does not mean you must react purely on reflex. Skills & Raids lets you pause at any moment—during exploration, mid-cast, or while three enemies telegraph overlapping attacks. Launch-week wipes often happen because new players hesitate to freeze time.

Use pause when a new enemy type appears, when two cooldowns align across Shelldon, Clawrk, and Owlivia, or when you need to read a debuff tooltip before cleansing. Queue your next actions for all three heroes, then unpause with a plan. Veterans pause for inventory triage too: moving items into your safe pocket before an elite fight is safer when time is stopped.

The Controls guide documents default keybinds; rebind pause to an easy reach key if you play on laptop keyboards.

Safe Pocket: What Survives Death

Your safe pocket is a protected sub-inventory. Items stored there survive if you die without extracting. Everything else in your raid bag is lost on wipe.

Launch-week priority order:

  1. Enemy skill drops you have not duplicated yet
  2. Epic and Rare crafting materials from deeper zones
  3. Active quest items required for main story progress
  4. High-value gear you cannot replace on the next run

Safe pocket slots are limited—do not treat it as overflow storage. Before optional elites or “one more room” pushes, pause, open inventory, and drag valuables into protected slots. Pair this habit with early extraction (covered below) and you will lose far less progress during the learning curve.

Full safe pocket workflows, sendback timing, and stash cleanup live on the Extraction page.

Crowy Sendbacks: Ship Loot Without Ending the Run

Crowy is the crow companion tied to map sendback points. When your inventory fills mid-run, interact with a Crowy surface to ship selected loot directly to your stash without ending the extraction. Items already delivered to stash cannot be lost if you wipe afterward.

Launch-week sendback tips:

  • Locate Crowy points on your first pass through each zone—mark them mentally before pushing deeper
  • Send back Common and Uncommon bulk early to keep bag space for Rare drops and skill loot
  • Do not send quest collection items you still need to turn in during the same run
  • Combine sendbacks with healing nodes when planning extended routes through The Sinking Graves or Cold Peaks

Crowy sendbacks reduce the temptation to carry a full bag through unknown rooms—a common cause of launch-week deaths. If you are unsure where sendback nodes appear on each map, cross-reference the Extraction guide and Map Areas hub.

Focus Points, Mshard, and Healing Nodes

Focus Points gate Owlivia’s strongest heals. If you burn focus on minor chip damage, you may have nothing left when a boss phase spikes party health downward. Pause before big fights and decide which heal is worth the focus cost versus waiting for a healing node.

Mshard serves both combat and crafting. Low Mshard reserves weaken Owlivia’s toolkit and limit post-run crafting options. Launch patch notes confirm healing nodes now restore 50% of your Health and 50% of your Mshard—a significant quality-of-life change from demo feedback.

Healing node habits for week one:

  • Use nodes when party health drops below 60%, not only at critical levels
  • Restore Mshard before optional elites, not after you have already spent cooldowns
  • Pause at the node, heal all three heroes, then check safe pocket status before continuing

Healing nodes buy time; they do not replace extraction when routes turn dangerous.

Extract Early—Greed Is the Real Boss

The extraction loop asks a Loop Hero–style question every run: how deep before risk outweighs reward? Launch-week players who extract early learn faster than those who chase “one more room” three times and wipe.

Practical extract triggers:

  • Primary quest objective complete and bags hold meaningful loot
  • Party below half health with no healing node on the known path
  • Cooldowns spent and the next zone layout is unknown
  • Rare items already secured in safe pocket; remaining bag space holds replaceable Common mats

Extracting successfully once teaches inventory rhythm, Crowy timing, and craft priorities more than a failed deep push. See Extraction for route planning and emergency retreat procedures.

Craft Shelldon First

After your first successful extraction, spend materials at the crafting station instead of hoarding indefinitely. Craft Shelldon’s weapon and chest piece first. Extra tank survivability prevents cascading party wipes—when Shelldon dies first, Clawrk and Owlivia usually follow within seconds.

Recommended early craft order:

  1. Shelldon weapon
  2. Shelldon chest armor
  3. Clawrk weapon
  4. One utility piece for Owlivia (cooldown reduction or healing power)

Check recipes before spending Rare mats; some early recipes consume items needed for quests. Full rarity tiers, modifier buttons, and stash transfer workflows are documented on the Crafting page.

Free Skills Rename (Formerly Fading Core Skills)

Patch 1.0 renamed Fading Core Skills to Free Skills for clarity. These baseline abilities ship with each hero and do not require rare drops to equip. They are your reliable starter kit before enemy skill loot expands your pool.

Launch-week implications:

  • Free Skills appear in a dedicated UI section separate from extracted abilities
  • Early runs depend heavily on Free Skills—do not discard them mentally as “weak defaults”
  • When comparing builds, note which slots use Free Skills versus looted replacements
  • Demo players should re-read tooltips; names changed but many effects stayed the same

Confusing Free Skills with temporary zone buffs leads to bad loadout decisions. Review your two active slots per hero before each raid.

Demo vs Full Release

The free Steam demo (App ID 4770110) covers tutorial flow, core pause combat, extraction basics, and a slice of early zones. It is an excellent test before purchase—but it is not the complete campaign.

What the full game adds after demo:

  • Complete story campaign with 21+ quests
  • Full crafting progression across five rarity tiers
  • All map areas, sendback routes, and late-game elites
  • 12 Steam achievements tracked on your profile (see Achievements guide)
  • Launch-week stash sort and transfer buttons not always shown in older demo builds

Demo veterans should still replay the tutorial’s first hour in 1.0—balance tweaks softened The Sinking Graves and Cold Peaks, and healing node values changed. Familiar controls carry over; risk math does not.

Launch Sale: $7.99 Until August 10, 2026

The base game lists at $9.99 USD with a 20% introductory discount to $7.99 until August 10, 2026 on Steam. That window is the lowest-risk time to buy if you already enjoyed the demo or launch trailers.

The sale does not gate content—all systems are in the base purchase. Optional Supporter Pack bundles add artbook and soundtrack extras for fans who want them. Pricing details and value breakdown sit in the Launch Review.
