Free Skills Guide

Patch 1.0 renamed Fading Core Skills to Free Skills — one of the most important clarity changes at the July 27, 2026 Steam launch. These baseline abilities ship with Shelldon, Clawrk, and Owlivia without requiring rare crafting materials or enemy drops. Every successful extraction run depends on pairing one Free Skill with one looted or crafted skill per hero until your stash supports riskier combinations.

This guide explains what Free Skills are, how they differ from enemy drops and crafted abilities, and how to build reliable loadouts during launch week.

What Are Free Skills?

Free Skills are the default active abilities each hero brings into every raid. They cannot be permanently lost on death if already equipped, and they do not consume Epic or Legendary mats to unlock. The developer renamed them from “Fading Core Skills” during Steam Next Fest polish (demo v1.4.8.1) because players confused the old label with decaying or temporary powers.

In practice, Free Skills are your safety net:

  • Always available after tutorial completion
  • Reliable in early zones like The Sinking Graves and Cold Peaks
  • Pair with one flexible slot for looted or crafted skills per hero

See the full Skills hub for enemy drops, focus mechanics, and combination rules.

Free Skills by Character

Shelldon (Tank)

Shelldon’s Free Skills anchor threat and survivability:

  • Taunt — Forces nearby enemies to attack Shelldon, protecting Owlivia and Clawrk
  • Shield Wall — Major damage reduction during burst phases
  • Fortify — Self-defense buff for extended elite fights

Launch-week data shows most wipes happen when Shelldon dies first. Keep at least one defensive Free Skill equipped even when experimenting with looted alternatives.

Clawrk (DPS)

Clawrk’s Free Skills deliver consistent damage without gambling on rare drops:

  • Claw Strike — Reliable single-target baseline attack
  • Frenzy — Burst sequence for priority targets and elites
  • Expose Weakness — Debuff that amplifies follow-up damage from the whole party

Pair Expose Weakness with Frenzy after Shelldon establishes threat. Read Combat for rotation timing in pause mode.

Owlivia (Healer)

Owlivia’s Free Skills cover sustain and cleanse — critical when launch reviews cite difficulty spikes between zones:

  • Healing Wave — AoE heal for party sustain after messy packs
  • Regeneration — Heal-over-time before predictable damage spikes
  • Purify — Cleanse debuffs that would otherwise cascade into wipes

Focus points gate Owlivia’s strongest heals. Do not burn focus on trash if the next room holds an elite — details on the Skills page.

Free Skills vs Enemy Drops vs Crafted Skills

SourceHow you get itRisk on deathBest use
Free SkillsDefault per heroLow — always re-equip at hubReliable baseline every run
Enemy dropsDefeat specific enemiesHigh if not in safe pocketBuild-defining rare abilities
Crafted skillsCrafting station matsMedium — stash between runsConsistent alternatives to farming drops

Launch-week rule: Run one Free Skill + one looted or crafted skill per hero until you can extract reliably from mid-campaign zones. Chasing double-rare loadouts before mastering pause and extraction loses more loot than it gains.

Patch History: Fading Core to Free Skills

  • Steam Next Fest (June 2026) — Demo v1.4.8.1 renamed Fading Core Skills to Free Skills in UI and patch notes
  • Launch v1.0 (July 27, 2026) — Full game retains the new naming; tooltips clarify they do not decay over time
  • No power nerf implied — The rename is clarity-only; abilities function as before

Track future skill balance on Updates. If cooldowns or Free Skill potencies change, revisit Builds and the Tier List.

  1. Shelldon: Taunt + Shield Wall — Maximum party protection for new buyers
  2. Clawrk: Expose Weakness + Frenzy — Burst after debuff without rare drops
  3. Owlivia: Regeneration + Purify — Sustain and cleanse for zone transitions

Swap one slot for a looted skill after your first successful extractions with materials in your safe pocket. The Getting Started guide walks through that first loop.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What happened to Fading Core Skills?

They were renamed Free Skills in demo v1.4.8.1 and launch v1.0. The abilities work the same — the new name clarifies they do not fade or expire.

Can I lose Free Skills when I die?

Free Skills are baseline kit tied to each hero. Re-equip them at Emberwatch between runs; they are not lost like unprotected loot.

How many skills can each hero equip alongside Free Skills?

Each hero equips two active skills per raid — typically one Free Skill and one looted or crafted skill during early progression.

Should beginners use only Free Skills?

Yes, until your first successful extractions. One Free Skill plus one flexible slot per hero is the safest launch-week approach.

Will Free Skills change in future patches?

Possible. Eddie H. Hinestroza is monitoring launch-week balance. Check Updates after each patch for cooldown or potency adjustments.
